Termite detection dog training and supply is another service provided by K9 Centre.com. We have developed a realistic training approach for dogs and handlers that utilises standard inspection practices along with thorough and proven dog training techniques to develop a canine that is accurate and consistent in the detection of the presence of  live termites.

Due to the termite dogs keen sense of smell, a properly trained termite dog can detect termites behind walls making them  closer to 95 to 97% accurate

Research from the Entomology Dept of University of Florida* has shown that properly trained termite dog teams are at least three times more accurate than human inspectors. Even the best termite inspector can't see through walls. But a termite detection dog doesn't need to, he can smell live termites through the wall and detect live termites before they have time to do so much damage to a structure that it can be visually detected by a human. Termite Dogs don’t need to see termites; they can smell them, through drywall, concrete, paneling and all other building materials. It has been proven by team after team that a termite dog is the best termite finding and business building tool on the market for the Pest Control Industry.

What type of dogs are trained?

If you would like your dog trained as a Termite Detection Dog it must display a natural ability to hunt things out and or have a over the top passion for food or a toy. We conduct our testing but the initial phone consultation with you which  provides us with enough information  to make a decision on whether to proceed with a one on one assessment of your dog

Your dog should be;

• Outgoing, sociable
• Love to play with toys or a strong drive for food
• Display a natural ability to want to find things, without coaxing from the owner.
• Fit and healthy and of a suitable age. (This varies from dog to dog)
• From a breed that is conducive in work ie: conducting searches in a home without disruption. E.g.: Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Jack Russell or equivalent cross breed.

Statistics Show: Humans are about 45% accurate in detecting live termites.  Trained detection dogs are more that 98% accurate in detecting live termites.
Intensive Training: Police and Customs Officials use detection dogs "sniffer dogs" extensively for the detection of drugs, explosives and people.  You will often see them working in airports with their handler checking passengers for any illegal items they may have in their possession. So it makes sense to use dogs for the detection of live termites in buildings. Trained the same way as Police and Customs dogs, Termite Detection dogs are trained to detect the scent of termites rather than the scent of an illicit substance. Our Termite detection Dogs undergo intensive specialist training through nationally accredited dog trainers.  It is this training that makes these dogs the most efficient and effective termite detection tool available. The Inspection Team: There are two components to an inspection using a Termite detection Dog.   After all if there is no live termites then there is no scent for the dog to find. the second part of the inspection is the inspection using the Termite detection Dog.  The Handler walks the dog through the building to pick up the scent of the termites.  The dog hones in on the area of infestation and give the handler a positive single that they have detected live termites by sitting down at the point of termite activity. Thermal imaging vs. Termite Detection Dogs: Thermal imaging cameras are another tool for detecting termites.  These heat seeking cameras were originally used by fire fighters to find people in smoke filled buildings.  They can also detect the heat given off by termites in a wall cavity.   Unfortunately, these devices are less accurate in hot weather as the heat of the day makes it difficult to detect the heat from termites.  There also needs to be a relatively large population of termites present to generate the heat required for detection by thermal imaging cameras. Termite detection dogs do not require a large population of termites and can actually detect the presence of a single termite.
